一.条款内容

Go to any country and ask the local residents what they are most associated with the British, and an answer will certainly appear. Somewhere between "tea", "rain" and "Shakespeare", you may hear "weirdos"-with good reason, because few countries produce so many weirdos. Here are three of the most noteworthy.

Lady Hester Stanhope (1776-1839)

Mrs Hurst, the niece of British Prime Minister William Pitt, was one of the first Europeans to explore Syria and Lebanon. A failed love made her abandon the English coast. In 1813, she rode to palmira disguised as an Arab soldier, where she was known as the "queen of the desert". During her wandering in the desert, she established a follower, and soon she began to believe in her kingship and retreated to a hilltop fortress, where she received the local chief.

When she began to study alchemy, her life became more extreme. Soon, her debt increased, the British government cut her pension, and her influence weakened, before she asked her servant to put her in her "palace" and vowed never to contact with the outside world again.

John Mytton (1796-1834)

"Crazy Jack" John Milton started the life he wanted and was expelled from Westminster School for attacking a teacher. The landlord of Shropshire soon discovered that his real occupation was one of the most notorious scoundrels in the Regency era.

His achievements include lighting his shirt to treat hiccups; Riding a horse up the hotel stairs, boarding The Upper Terrace, then jumping off the diners in the restaurant below, riding a bear for dinner.

William Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland (1800-1879)

Few recluses have guarded their seclusion as seriously as the Duke of Portland. He turned his estate, Welbeck Abbey, into a honeycomb of underground rooms and passages, including a one-and-a-half-mile tunnel that could spirit him off the grounds without being seen.

His valet was allegedly the only person allowed to see him in person, with all other contact being via two mailboxes in his private rooms.
