The skeleton in the cupboard is a short story in Ruskin Bond's Secret. This story is about solving a mystery surrounding a skeleton found in the old storage room of the Green Hotel. On that occasion, young Ruskin went to boarding school in Simla. He contacted his mother by mail, who was the manager of the hotel, to gain extensive knowledge about bones. It can be clearly seen from the letter that this skeleton belongs to a woman. Around 1930, people found some newspapers wrapped around it.

The question is, who can that woman be? The first owner of this hotel, Mr. Green, was a pervert: he had a charming personality and elegant manners. He is keen on extramarital affairs. His wife disappeared one day. During World War II, Mr. Green died in a shipwreck on his way to England. Therefore, Ruskin and his mother think that this skeleton belongs to Mrs. Green. The conclusion is that Mr. Green killed his wife to get the love of other women, or he paid someone to do this dirty job. With the help of Padre Dutt, they thought it was Mrs. Green's bone and gave it a Christian funeral.

A few days later, an English lady walked into the hotel and began to ask about Mrs. Green's funeral. Then, she said she was Mrs. Green. She told her story that Mr. Green was a prodigal son, but not a killer. She was tired of him, so she fled to West Africa to live with a cousin and fell in love with a black man there.

Regarding the skeleton, she revealed that it was for the purpose of medical school, because Mr. Green wanted to open a medical school in Drayton. So that skeleton was brought from Delhi and probably belonged to a poor woman on the roadside. Ironically, Mrs. Green will have two tombstones at one birth. All the efforts made by Ruskin, a child detective, to solve this mystery were in vain. This is an interesting reading.
