今天我们将继续学习第七课的“每课一句话”。

一.原文

Lesson 7 Too late

The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamond from South Africa. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!

第二，每课一句话

While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel.

作为连词，while在句子中有两个主要意思，即“当……”还有“虽然，虽然”。

当表达“当……”，一般来说，两个句子的谓语动词会用在进行时态。但是这句话中的open用的是过去式，因为open是瞬时动词，不能用在进行时态中。

在这节课中，还有一个使用while的句子，意思是“当……”：

When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield.

在这个句子中，wait都用进行时态，因为wait是一个进行动词。

当while表示“虽然，虽然”时，第一句和第二句的谓语动词不一定要用进行时态。比如：

In a word, while the prospects are bright, the road has twists and turns.

总之，前途虽光明，道路曲折。

第三，相关扩展

注意课文的最后一句话：

To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!

其中，to one's surprise的意思是“令.吃惊”一般来说，“to one's名词表示情绪”常用来表示“是什么造就了某人”。比如：

To his disappointment, to his disappointment)

令她兴奋的是

令他们吃惊的是

另一个例子是：

He bought a new apartment in Shanghai last year. But to his disappointment, the prices of houses have gone down ever since the beginning of this year.

他去年在上海买了一栋房子。但令他失望的是，自今年年初以来，房价一直在下跌。
