我们都知道英语中的名词可以分为可数名词和不可数名词,但是我们很难区分哪些名词是可数的哪些是不可数的,也很难区分哪些不可数名词也可以用作可数名词。

为此,我们来看看利兹沃尔特是如何解释的。

Many English learning dictionaries show whether nouns are "countable" or "uncountable", and usually use abbreviations C and U. Countable nouns are things you can count-one dog, two dogs, twenty dogs and so on. Uncountable nouns are things you can't count-water, sadness, plastic, etc.

很多英语词典都会标注名词是否可数。一般C(可数)代表可数名词(如狗),U(不可数)代表不可数名词(如塑料)。

1) It is important to know whether a noun is countable or uncountable, otherwise you are likely to make basic grammatical mistakes. For example, countable nouns can have indefinite articles and form plural, but uncountable nouns cannot (countable nouns can be modified by indefinite articles,

Correct. You should take a coat. (coat is a countable noun)

Correct. I have three winter coats.

错误:老师给了我们一个家。(home是不可数名词,应去掉不定冠词A)

We have a lot of homework. (Homework should be changed to homework)

2) If there are countable nouns and uncountable nouns in your mother tongue, you need to be very careful, because they may not be the same. If I had a pound every time my students said or wrote "a suggestion" or "some information", I would be rich now! In English, advice and information are uncountable nouns, so they cannot be preceded by an and cannot be plural.

有些名词只能做不可数名词,比如建议和信息。所以,我们不能说一个建议或许多信息,

You can only say one suggestion or a lot of information.

3) Other common uncountable words that often cause problems are: equipment, furniture, transportation, knowledge, countryside, transportation, research, progress, evidence and machinery.

上面粗体字都是不可数的,所以没有复数。

4) You also need to know whether a noun is countable or uncountable before you can decide whether to say more or not. Many is used with plural countable nouns, and much is used with uncountable nouns (when we use many or many,

Correct: How many brothers and sisters do you have?

Error: How many brothers and sisters do you have?

Correct. How much money do you have?

How much money do you have?

5)Some and any are used with plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns, not with singular countable nouns (Some and any can only be used to modify plural countable nouns or uncountable nouns,

: We don't have any eggs/sugar.

Correct. Do you want some mushrooms/cheese?

Wrong. Do you have a coat? (The coat should be changed into a coat)

6) Sometimes we may want to make an uncountable noun more like a singular countable noun. We use quantitative expressions before it (the number of uncountable nouns,

She gave us a suggestion/information.

Correct. She gave us a piece of advice/information.

For example, we bought some furniture/clothes.

We bought some pieces of furniture/clothes.

7) Finally, some uncountable nouns end in' s' They include activities such as aerobics, track and field, gymnastics and darts; Economics, linguistics, politics and physics, and diseases such as measles, mumps, rabies and diabetes. These nouns look like countable plural, but they are uncountable, so they need a singular verb (some nouns indicating sports, disciplines and diseases often end in S,

Linguistics is a very interesting subject.

Aerobics makes you fit.

You may notice that some words in the dictionary are marked with C and U at the same time. In my next article, I will look at some of these words and explain how nouns are both countable and uncountable.

英语中还有一些名词既可数又不可数,我们后面会继续讨论。
