多摩艺术大学创建于1935年，名为“多摩帝国艺术学校”，绰号“多摩比”，1950年成为初级学院，1953年成为提供四年制学位课程的完整大学。1964年，它成为第一所开设研究生院的日本艺术学校，1989年引入硕士学位，2001年引入博士学位。艺术考古研究所于2006年作为研究中心开业
在“手工制作”的口号下，它已成为当今日本领先的艺术学校之一，赢得了国内外的认可
它以两个校区为基础，有两个研讨会室，一个位于富士山山麓。行政总部位于Kaminaje，靠近东京的商业和媒体中心，而大多数学术活动都在1971年开放的位于东京西部的八王子校区，隶属于艺术与设计学院和研究生院
八王子图书馆建于2007年，由伊藤丰雄设计。伊藤丰夫是2013年被称为建筑界诺贝尔奖的普利兹克奖得主，也是Tamabi的客座教授。著名的校友包括1964年毕业于平面设计专业的时装设计师三宅一生
2018年初，共有4500多名学生，其中包括约300名研究生。在艺术与设计学院所有13个系的硕士研究生中，女性占多数。435名留学生中，中国和韩国的留学生比例略高于90%
Founded in 1935 as Tama Imperial Art School and nicknamed "Tamabi", Tama Art University became a junior college in 1950 and a full university offering four-year degree courses in 1953. It became the first Japanese art school to open a Graduate School in 1964, introducing master's degrees in 1989 and doctorates from 2001. The Institute of Art Archaeology opened as a research centre in 2006.
Under the slogan of "Made by Hands", it is today one of Japan’s leading art schools, winning both national and international recognition.
It is based on two campuses and has two seminar houses, one in the foothills of Mount Fujiyama. The administrative headquarters are at Kaminaje, close to the commercial and media centres of Tokyo while most academic activity, grouped under the faculty and graduate school of Art and Design, is based at the Hachioji campus in the west of the city, which was opened in 1971.
The Hachioji library, built in 2007 to the designs of Toyo Ito - 2013 winner of the Pritzker prize, known as architecture’s Nobel Prize, and a visiting professor at Tamabi - features frequently in the architectural press. Notable alumni include the fashion designer Issey Miyake, who graduated in graphic design in 1964.
There were more than 4,500 students including around 300 postgraduates at the beginning of 2018. Women accounted for the majority of master's students and in all 13 departments of the Faculty of Art and Design. China and Korea between them supplied just over 90 per cent of the 435 overseas students.
