Kanazawa Medical University is a specialist private university in Uchinada, Ishikawa, central Japan.
The university was set up in 1972, at a time when rapid economic growth in the country fuelled a need for better medical resources and medical professionals in particular. Kanazawa Medical University is one of 34 new medical schools founded during that time.
In 1982, the university expanded with the opening of its Graduate School of Medical Science, and again in 1989 with the opening of a specialist medical research institute. More recently, two undergraduate and graduate schools of nursing have been built.
Kanazawa Medical University general hospital is on site, and Kanazawa Medical University Himi Municipal Hospital in Himi, Toyama is also linked with the university.
While the majority of courses offered fall under the university’s departments of medical studies and nursing, a number of general education degree options are available in subjects including humanities, mathematics and English language.
According to data collected for the 2018 Times Higher Education Japan Rankings, approximately 1,151 full time students are enrolled at the university, of which roughly 2.2 per cent are international. The university has a ratio of 2.4 students to every staff member.
Admissions are highly selective, with around 4 per cent of applications accepted for enrollment at the institution.
Campus facilities include sports fields and an extensive library. Here, students can access medical journals from around the world, as well as books and other resources from other Japanese universities as part of the library’s mutual borrowing agreement.
The campus and hospital facilities are well connected by train, bus and underground network to nearby Kahoku and Kanazawa cities.
