Some New Year traditions in the world have a serious atmosphere. They were tied to ancient religious ceremonies. They were created by legal decrees. Or they just involve impressive fires in public places. Anyway, it is important to realize why we celebrate the New Year in this way.

Sydney Harbour hosts one of the biggest New Year's Eve celebrations in the world. It's midsummer in the southern hemisphere, and thousands of people gather around the opera house, full of expectations. At 6 o'clock in the evening, an air show and a water show kicked off the celebration. At 9 o'clock in the evening, a fireworks show suitable for families began, while the main scenic spot-the harbor lantern parade-was held at midnight.

In Belarus, the New Year is part of Kaliady, a 13-day cultural festival. Kaliadi originated from the ancient pagan recognition of the winter solstice. It was not until later that Orthodox Christians joined in the celebration of Christmas (January 7th). Kalidi had traditional food at three ceremonial dinners, trick or treat, singing carols, and so on.

3. Netherlands (Netherlands)

Amsterdam hosts one of the biggest street parties in the world on New Year's Eve. If you attend, buy some oil balls to eat in the middle of the night. Traditionally, eating these fried dough balls can ward off evil spirits in the new year. Dam Square (the craziest), Rembrandtplein, Nieuwmarkt and Leidseplein hold unofficial street parties with music, fireworks and beer tents. The celebration in Amsterdam is not suitable for ordinary parties: some participants compare it to a war zone!

Celebrating Hogmanay, which denotes the last day of the year, is a big deal in Scotland. So much so that it often overshadows Christmas. Christmas was outlawed by the Church of Scotland for nearly four centuries, until 1958. Though the holiday has regained its popularity, the New Year Festival of Hogmanay still holds a sacred place in Scottish hearts.

5. United States (USA)

Every year, thousands of people flock to new york City to watch the big apple fall at midnight. This New Year's Eve tradition actually started as a substitute for fireworks, which are banned in new york. In addition to watching the ball fall, in other cities in the United States, you can also watch peaches, big eyes and other local related symbols fall with the stroke of midnight.
