Located in the city of Lahore, the University of the Punjab, also known as Punjab University, is the oldest public university in Pakistan.
Originally established by the British Government in 1882, this was the fourth university to be created by the British colonial authorities in the Indian subcontinent.
The University of Punjab is not to be confused with Panjab University in the city of Chandigarh, India, from which it split when Pakistan became independent.
Many institutions that were previously parts of Punjab University have now become independent universities, such as Government College University and the medical and engineering colleges.
Today, over 45,000 students are enrolled across 83 academic departments, research centres and institutes within the 13 faculties. There are over 1,300 faculty members.
The is spread across several Punjab campuses. The old campus or Allama Iqbal Campus is named after the mystic poet, Allama Iqbal. It houses the Senate and other administrative buildings.
The new campus called the Quaid-i-Azam Campus after the founder of Pakistan covers 1,800 acres of lush green landscape. It is the centre of academic and administrative activities, as well as housing students.
The Gujranwala and Jhelum campuses house the faculties of commerce, economics and management sciences, law and science.
The summer campus of Khanspur Campus is in the Himalayan mountains, at a height of about 7,000 feet above sea level. Alongside research, it is used as a recreational centre.
The university motto translates as "Faith, Unity, Discipline". The official colours are blue, bronze and red.
