Fu Jen Catholic University is a private institution located in the vibrant city of New Taipei in northern Taiwan.
The university teaches more than 25,000 students across 11 colleges and offers courses in subjects ranging from philosophy to Italian, and medicine to Catholic studies. It has an international outlook with more than 300 sister institutions across the globe.
Fu Jen Catholic University was established in Beijing in the 1920s by Benedictines and moved to the island nation of Taiwan in 1961 with the help of the Society of Jesus, Society of the Divine Word and the Regional Bishops’ Conference. The university symbol includes a laurel wreath, representing peace, and 12 stars symbolising the Virgin Mary. Fu Jen’s motto roughly translates to truth, goodness, beauty and sanctity.
A Catholic university hospital is under construction next door to Fu Jen. The shape of the building is inspired by Noah’s Ark, while the green design includes a planned hanging garden for patients.
Fu Jen University Station, a stop on the Taipei metro, is adjacent to the university offering easy access to the city of New Taipei with its night markets, temples and museums, while the country’s subtropical climate is ideal for excursions to nearby waterfalls, hot springs, beaches and mountains.
Students and staff can fly from the Asian tiger’s capital to the metropolises of Shanghai and Hong Kong in under two hours, while the Philippine city of Manila and the South Korean capital, Seoul, are accessible in under three hours.
Famous Fu Jen alumni include Wang Guangmei, a former first lady of China.
